KNOW ARVIND KHANNA

Arvind Khanna

Hello,

My heart goes out to the families of those killed and injured in the blasts outside Delhi high court on September 7. We should end petty party politics and fight the scourge of terrorism with resolve, passion, focus and scientific counter-measures. I would also like to extend my condolences to the families of the victims of the devastating earthquake that rocked Sikkim, West Bengal, Bihar and parts of north India on September 18.

August saw a nation finding its inner voice and articulating its anger against corruption. So, from where was the disillusionment stemming from? While the unending number of corruption cases was the focal point, people were angry about the neglect: crumbling urban infrastructure, limited opportunities for higher education and few formal sector jobs. In Punjab, for example, corruption has invaded the system. From the local ration shop to the civic authorities and police, the common man can get no work done without paying a bribe.

The issue of corruption has to be addressed seriously and immediately before it starts rotting the country’s basic fabric. But as Rahul Gandhi said “an effective Lokpal law is only one element in the legal framework to combat corruption. The Lokpal institution alone cannot be a substitute for a comprehensive anti-corruption code”. We should follow Gandhi’s suggestion to fortify the Lokpal bill by making it a constitutional body like the Election Commission of India. A firm political will is essential to fight corruption, but we should keep in mind that democratic processes are not weakened in the pursuit of a Lokpal.

Dr Manmohan Singh had shown his unfailing commitment to weed out corruption from the government by divesting people of their ministerial portfolios. Many have been put behind bars, which show the keenness and commitment of the UPA government. When the Congress comes to power in Punjab, we will strengthen the institution of Lok Ayukta and make it more strong and effective to ensure that it serves its goal.

Meanwhile back in Sangrur, we have added 14 more SHGs to our Umeed family, which now comprises 3,952 members. The NGO’s products were showcased at “Wedding Asia” in Chandigarh. Visitors were stunned by the beautiful and intricate crochet and embroidery work.

I am also happy that all our programmes - the notebook distribution scheme, job placement cell, stitching centres and income generation activities – are running on schedule and working towards empowering the people of Sangrur.

As always, I welcome you to give your feedback and suggestions.

Happy Reading!
