KNOW ARVIND KHANNA

Arvind Khanna
Hello everyone,

I am delighted that the Italian government has decided that from now on Sikhs will not have to remove their turbans during security checks at airports. The credit goes to the Congress led-UPA government at the Centre which took up the matter with the Italian government to ensure that the religious sentiments of Sikhs are not hurt. I hope other countries in Europe will follow suit.

Jatinder Singh, who had cracked the IIT-JEE exam, has got admission in IIT, Roorkee, in the computer science stream. A big congratulations to him! June was an activity-filled month for both Umeed and me. We realised a long-cherished dream of starting a free job placement service for youth in Sangrur and its adjoining districts. The service will enable educated youngsters to find jobs according to their qualifications/skills.

We will also conduct Career Focus Finder (CFF) tests in schools in Sangrur and Bhawanigarh city with the help of JobCorp to allow children to make informed choices about subjects and career.

This month, we celebrated AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi’s birthday in a unique way at an old-age home in Sangrur. The inmates of the home were thrilled and wished our young and dynamic leader a long and healthy life.

Umeed’s good work was covered by DD News and telecast on June 18. It was a proud moment for everyone associated with the NGO.

I would like to congratulate Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi for increasing the number of BPL beneficiaries in Punjab.

The state government is going on announcing projects but I see no action on the ground. I also fail to understand how a cash-strapped government is announcing so many schemes worth crores. I recently visited Bhawanigarh and was appalled to hear people’s grievances. The Akali Dal government is doing nothing to improve the situation there. If the Congress government comes to power in the state, then Bhawanigarh will be upgraded to a sub division. We will also open an ITI and a college in Bhawanigarh.

Our past two issues of the newsletter received tremendous feedbacks. I hope you will continue with your suggestions and ideas to make this newsletter more interesting and informative.

Happy Reading
