Hi,

The year is drawing to an end and we decided to step into 2012 with a fresh new look. Hope all of you like the revamped newsletter. As always, I welcome your feedback and suggestions.

I am happy that through Umeed I could steadfastly pursue my goal of social empowerment of Sangrur. I do not know to what extent I will realise my dream of seeing a prosperous Sangrur, but I will keep on devoting all my resources and time to the welfare of my people.

It gives me immense pride to see Umeed flourishing with each passing day. Three more self-help groups were formed in November. Umeed has opened 10 saving bank accounts and given a total loan of Rs 2 lakh. Twenty-three people have also started income generational activities.

Umeed also started helping five more students complete their school and college education. Children are our best resources today. Every child is the torch bearer of the future. Apart from poor development, the state is also suffering from a deteriorating law and order situation. My close friend and able Congressman, Ricky Dulat, who was the organizing secretary of DCC, was brutally murdered. His gruesome death has left me shocked and pained. My heartfelt condolences to his family. Rikki's murder has sounded the dead knell of the Akali-BJP combine. The Congress will ensure that justice is done and the murderers are caught soon. I promise that once Capt Amarinder becomes the chief minister of Punjab after the assembly elections, the land mafia, irrespective of their party affiliation, will be eliminated.

A lot has been written about the Centre’s proposal to introduce FDI in retail, but from the standpoint of my region, what a farmer needs is crop-diversification. Be it minimal, but the sooner diversification starts, the better it will be for farm economics and environmental balance. With more products in his basket, the farmer will be in better position to negotiate, and it would matter little to him, whether the buyer is a multi-national, a home grown company, or a retailer. The interests of the farmer will be well-looked after both by the market forces and the government.

I wish all my well-wishers and supporters a happy new year. May 2012 bring prosperity and peace to our beloved state.

Happy Reading

Arvind Khanna
