Awareness Program

Umeed in its own small way has created awareness about HIV/AIDS, with two high risk communities like the truckers' and the migrant labour community in Sangrur district in Punjab. Supported by the Punjab State AIDS Control Society, Umeed has in the past targeted both these communities directly with HIV/AIDS awareness generation and targeted intervention programmes. The target population (truck drivers and migrant labour) are at a high risk of contracting the virus, as their jobs entail widespread travel, providing many opportunities for contact with casual sex workers practicing unsafe sex. Therefore we have undertaken programmes by educating and spreading information through peer educators, counselors and qualified doctors. This programme has covered 10,000 truckers and 5,000 migrant laborers.

Umeed also organizes periodic health check-ups for school children and senior citizens in Sangrur district. Umeed has joined hands with Airtel Bharti Schools, who are opening schools in rural areas, where it will carry out quarterly health checks for each student.

Umeed has been spreading awareness on issues like immunization of children at the right age, HIV/AIDS and protection against seasonal diseases which afflict rural people during winter, rainy and extreme summer season. These are ongoing awareness programme that are handled by the medical teams of Umeed.
