SANGRUR: Senior Congress leader and former Sangrur legislator Arvind Khanna Monday called for urgent measures to improve the sex ratio in the state and save the daughters of Punjab. He regretted that the gravity of situation was still not being felt and warned that in case urgent remedial measures were not taken it might be too late.

Reacting to the census figures released last week, particularly regarding the skewe sex ratio in the state, Khanna said, this is high time that all political parties woke up to the urgency of the matter. He said, although the male-female ratio in the state has gone up from 876 in 2001 to 893 in 2011, this is no consolation as the gap is still alarmingly too wide.

The Congress leader suggested evolving all party consensus on the issue as also involving various Non Governmental Organisations and civil society to build up a movement to save the girl child. Appreciating the improvement in the sex ratio, he said, "We still have a long way to go and we need to use all resources to ensure that our daughters are treated like sons."
